Torso Sculpture Carved in Large Stone
Shona torso sculpture usually requires a large piece of quality stone to achieve the desired representation. Unfortunately, skyrocketing petrol prices and the high cost of shipping rock in Zimbabwe made a significant impact on the production of torso sculpture, as well as many other forms of this world recognized tribal art. This left many Shona carvers without the means to sustain their craft and, in many cases, forced them to look for other work to support their families.
Muvezi saw the opportunity to lend aid and not only provide weekly shipments of the finest stone from Zimbabwe, but to establish a system that encourages artists to reach new heights in creative expression. Please read Our Story to learn how Muvezi is restoring hope for families in devastated Africa.
Torso Tiger Sculpture Emanates Power
Shona torso tiger or other African wildlife statues radiate an intangible eminence. To display such a torso sculpture is to appreciate an animal’s strength and acknowledge the power and fluidity of this beast.
Human Torso Enhanced By Zimbabwean Stone
The human torso is often a primary subject matter for African art, and Shona artists tend to favour three-dimensional artwork that is not individual or even gender specific.
Human torso sculptures are enhanced by the various types of stone used for carvings: scintillating serpentines, verdite, butter jade, and brilliant white granites. The complex combinations of minerals within the stones create the colourful palette unique to Zimbabwean carving stone.
